Hey gf! Ever wondered what it's like to be a fashion designer at Kiwi? To celebrate the launch of the Kiwi Resort collection we spoke to our designer Emma about the design process for some of your fave items!

What was the inspiration for this collection?

For the Kiwi Resort collection, I was initially inspired by the tones and aesthetic of the iconic 80s show Miami Vice. I knew I wanted to incorporate those gelato pastel tones and quirky graphics and shapes which are synonymous with the Synthwave music era. Once I’d nailed a concept, I worked on commercialising the trend in to cool, wearable pieces for the Kiwi girl. As the collection developed, I started incorporating deeper tones and prints to lead into high summer and move from Miami to Ibiza – echoing that Club Paradiso vibe.

How do you imagine these items being worn?

I wanted to create collection that could be worn multiple ways. Each piece has been designed with various locations and events in mind, from summer day-drinks to late night beach club. I love that I can see a purpose for them at home or on holiday.

What is your fav piece from the resort collection?

My fav piece from the resort collection is, undoubtedly, the Tulum Set. I am obsessed with the fresh gingham print, and I’ve already worn it so many ways. Paired with chunky dad trainers, our Kiwi Tote and sleek sunnies is my go-to.

How long does the design process take from start to finish?

I always start the design process by creating a full season forecast – I’m all about planning, and I like to have rough design concepts mapped out for the next 4-6 months. Once I’ve done this, I’ll start sketching and creating CADs of potential garments before beginning fabric sourcing. Once I’ve got the right shape and fabric, I’ll then send designs off for sampling and wait for the first sample to arrive before giving fit comments and approving fabrics. Once we get the final sample back, I’ll present to the team for sign-off where we all collaborate and ensure the range feels cohesive. In total, this process can take anything from 6-8 weeks from start to finish: a lot more goes into it than people think.

What is your “must have” holiday item?

My must have holiday item is definitely sun cream. You must look after your skin girls, you only get one. My go to is Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration, I’ve been buying it for years. My advice would be, always get a separate sun cream for your face, they always have better ingredients and tend to be gentler on your skin.
